Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated at the top of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 via the grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky because there are two connector pins and they serve different purposes but the best method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read about 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The 4th one remains shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. i get 0ohm. So i assume the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car is able to start when the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is plugged in however it is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows a temperature of -49c. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, i believe that i've ruled out everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or from a parts store. It is easy to test them - simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you encounter a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause the engine shutting down.

Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or misfiring when you are in gear. If you have any of these issues it is most likely that your sensor is failing and requires replacement car key audi. They're inexpensive and easy to locate, especially if they're a Bosch unit like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part is an option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a myriad of issues within your vehicle. It is an important part of the transmission in your audi A3 spare key, as it transmits information to the ECU regarding how fast or slowly the engine is turning. This sensor can cause the transmission to malfunction and other components in the audi car keys replacement to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It transmits signals via gray wire to ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then processes the signal to control fuel, timig and Vehicle boost as well as transmitting it to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see the resistance to be around 1000 ohms between these points. This is a common feature across the audi keyless entry 80-100-200-RS2 range, from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 Du, so you might find good ones in wrecking yards.
